WHAT:
In Indonesia, 30 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, and government, industry and environmental groups strive to obtain a balance between social, economic and environmental priorities. Greenspirit Strategies conducted a recent on-the-ground assessment and found that a primary cause of deforestation and habitat loss in the country is poverty. In Sumatra, for example, national migrants are illegally encroaching on forests driven by poverty and the desire to make a better life for their families.
