Clean Currents LLC., a leading green energy company in the Mid-Atlantic, today announced it has achieved certification as a B Corporation, a socially responsible business designation. This achievement makes Clean Currents only the fourth company in Maryland to attain this classification and the first in Montgomery County.

"Other companies talk about being sustainable, but getting certified as a B Corporation, which includes independent third party verification, proves that we really walk the sustainable walk."

The B Corporation (B Corp) certification process was conceived in 2006 by the non-profit organization B Lab, which still administers the certification, with the purpose of officially designating a business as "socially responsible." In addition to providing an independent assessment of a business's level of social responsibility, the B Corp certification process requires a business to change its governing document to consider the interests of societal stakeholders, including employees, the communities in which it operates, and the natural environment.

Clean Currents achievement of B Corp's certification follows the company's long standing commitment to being a sustainably operated "for profit company with a non-profit mission." The company was among the first businesses in Montgomery County to be certified as "sustainable" by the Montgomery County government. In addition, Clean Currents is a member of several sustainable business groups, including Green America, the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance, and a founding member of Bethesda Green. Clean Currents is one of the few companies in the region that has a comprehensive "green benefits package" for its employees and it actively supports and lobbies for positive environmental legislation on a state and regional level.
