The Net Impact chapter of The George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) attained a gold rating, joining an elite group of graduate, student-led chapters worldwide recognized for outstanding work advancing social and environmental sustainability through business. Only seven percent of Net Impact chapters across six continents have attained gold chapter status.

The GW-Net Impact chapter is part of a global, non-profit network of emerging leaders in corporate responsibility and sustainability dedicated to using business as a vehicle for social change. The gold chapters are "the most outstanding chapters in the global Net Impact network characterized by energetic members, dynamic leadership, and excellence in all that they do," according to Net Impact.

"Achieving gold status is a tribute to the passion, ingenuity, and leadership of our students who collaborate with us to make sustainability a more robust dimension of our MBA curriculum and programming," said GW-Net Impact faculty co-advisor Mark Starik, chair and professor of strategic management and public policy and director of The GW Institute for Sustainability.

Recent accomplishments of the GW-Net Impact chapter include:

  • Five GWSB MBA graduates were the first in the nation to earn a Certificate in Responsible Management. Created by GW-Net Impact's curriculum change initiative and anchored in the UN Principles for Responsible Management, it is the first certification program of its kind in the United States.

  • Conference co-host for The Business Response to Climate Change: Convened DC entrepreneurs, policy experts, and nonprofit leaders at GW to collaborate on a vision for a renewable and sustainable future.

  • The creation of a 2,000-square-foot green roof atop the Elliot School of International Affairs.

  • Instrumental in helping GWSB to secure a 13 out of 100 ranking worldwide and 10th in the nation by The Aspen Institute's Beyond Grey Pinstripes for MBA programs leading the way in the integration of social and environmental stewardship into the curriculum.

Net Impact is an international nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire, educate, and equip individuals to use the power of business to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable world.

GWSB prepares students for professional management careers. The depth and variety of its academic and professional programs, including five specialized master's programs, provide rich opportunities for students in the school's core bachelor of business administration, master of business administration and doctoral programs. GW's undergraduate- and graduate-level international business programs rank among the world's best.
