Firms will rely on IT to cut carbon emissions

PCs will be more modular and robust and will play an important part to cut carbon emissions, reports Envido.

Companies will rely on IT in their effort to reduce their carbon footprint, according to a new report published by tech industry advisory agency Gartner entitled "Gartner top end user predictions for 2010: coping with the new balance of power".

In response to the burden of regulation and public opinion about climate change, companies have to look for ways to do business differently. IT has proved its ability to make organisations more efficient and profitable, so firms have turned to technology as a way of reducing their carbon footprints.

The pressure to demonstrate responsibility for carbon emissions will force businesses to quantify carbon costs in business cases

One of the most important trends according to Gartner research is that by 2014, "most IT business cases will include, carbon remediation" costs. Economic and political pressure to demonstrate responsibility for carbon dioxide emissions will force more businesses to quantify carbon costs in business cases."

Rising energy costs are already driving the uptake of IT systems with lower power consumption than their predecessors, and this trend will continue. According to the report "carbon costs shadow energy costs, requiring the addition of an emissions factor (carbon emissions per kWh) and a projected cost of' "carbon remediation". As a consequence, vendors will have to provide carbon life cycle statistics for their products or face market share erosion.

Current efforts to reduce energy are focused primarily on Datacenters. However, the PCs present in every office are meant to play an important part. The report predicts that in 2012, 60% of a new PC's total life carbon emissions will have occurred during manufacture and in the supply chain. This will drive more companies to upgrade the PCs rather than replace them.

Ideally, PCs would be more modular and robust, allowing them to be upgraded to extend life. So far, the industry has not pursued upgrading as a strategy, due to the obvious implications on demand. However, as usage-related carbon emissions grow, PC manufacturers and vendors can expect pressure to deliver more modular, upgradable PCs.
