Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) has published its 2009 Social Responsibility Report, which focuses on the policies, objectives, performance and activities of the company and its subsidiaries (collectively, Oxy) in corporate governance, labor, human rights and health, environment and safety (HES).

Achievements highlighted in the report, titled "Dedicated Partner, Employer, Neighbor," include:

• Exemplary worldwide safety performance: Employee Injury and Illness Incidence Rate (IIR) of 0.41 was the second-lowest in company history and approximately nine times better than the U.S. industry average


• Placed among the top 1 percent of all companies rated by GovernanceMetrics International (GMI) and commended by GMI for maintaining "best in class corporate governance standards"


• Of the international oil companies operating in the Middle East, Oxy is noted for hiring among the highest percentage of national workers; for example, in Oman, Oxy's workforce was composed of approximately 75 percent national workers in 2009


• Named a Natural Gas STAR Continuing Excellence (5 Years) award winner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency


• One of the top two oil and gas companies and No. 26 overall on Corporate Responsibility Magazine's 100 Best Corporate Citizens list for 2010


• Selected for the Dow Jones North America Sustainability Index based on an evaluation of governance and sustainability performance
