HumanityCalls.org today launched its initial fundraising tournament with $50,000 from eBay. For 8 weeks, a global community will vote on the top environmental nonprofits around the world to determine how this money, and much more, will be split up.

The tournament is at the heart of a movement in which organizations use online voting to inspire philanthropy. Unique to Humanity Calls, however, is a primary focus on social media and game play elements, which are expected to drive greater participation and charitable giving.

While Humanity Calls aims to conduct multiple tournaments over time, its first revolves around environmental issues, such as climate change, conservation, renewable energy and pollution. Over 100 nonprofits have signed up for the tournament, with more expected to join.

"Humanity Calls will invigorate the fundraising process and make it fun," says Humanity Calls Director, Ron Bouganim. "Through game mechanics and social networking, many small acts of kindness can add up to real change on a planetary level."

How the Tournament Works

  • Nonprofit organizations focused on the environment register at no cost, create a profile at HumanityCalls.org and reach out to their supporters asking for their vote.

  • Simply logging in to HumanityCalls.org provides anyone with an initial vote to cast in favor of the organization they believe to be most worthy to share in the tournament cash pool.

  • Additional votes can be earned by donating directly to participating nonprofits, donating to the larger tournament cash pool and referring others to HumanityCalls.org.

  • At the tournament close, the top-voted nonprofits share in the cash pool, consisting of the original $50,000 sponsor donation from eBay plus all donations made by individuals to the tournament cash pool during the tournament.

  • 100% of all donations collected by Humanity Calls during the tournament (less third party payment processing fees) are passed along to nonprofits.

"eBay is proud to be the first company to support a Humanity Calls fundraising tournament," said Robert Chatwani, head of Global Citizenship for eBay. "Their emphasis on crowd sourcing and social networking to drive online fundraising is a model that we intuitively understand at eBay, and the immediate focus on the environment gives us the opportunity to support an issue that is high priority for us."

The eBay Fundraising Tournament for the Environment will run through June 22, 2010. Humanity Calls plans to host future fundraising tournaments for global causes such as health, education, poverty and human rights.
