Demand Studios Freelance Community Provides More Than 10,000 New Books to Children in Need

In the second Write for a Cause campaign, thousands of Demand Studios® freelance writers and editors contributed 84,536 articles in March, making it possible for 10,567 new books to reach the hands of children in need nationwide.

Demand Media™, the leader in distributed social media and web content, asked its Demand Studios community of more than 5,000 freelance writers and editors to participate in the "Write for a Cause" program to increase childhood literacy. For every eight articles written and approved during the two-week campaign March 15-31, Demand Media donated a book on behalf of its writers and copy editors to First Book, the award-winning nonprofit that has provided over 70 million books to children in need.

"In our second Write for a Cause campaign, we are proud of our writers and editors for working to provide more books to the kids who need them most," said Stewart Marlborough, general manager of Demand Studios, the content-creation arm of Demand Media. "Our freelance writers and editors live by the written word, and their involvement has shown a tremendous commitment to increasing literacy among children in need."

Demand Media and First Book launched the first "Write for a Cause" campaign in December. In total, Demand Media has donated 26,693 new books through its two campaigns. Both the company and its freelance community are actively committed to "writing for a cause," creating articles such as "How to Be a Storyteller" and "How to Teach Your Child to Read" which provide useful information on sites like eHow.com that also help in the fight against illiteracy.

"The writers and editors at Demand Studios have taken a stand against illiteracy and because of their efforts, we are able to reach more children in need with thousands of new books," said Kyle Zimmer, President and CEO of First Book. "We are grateful that the Demand Studios community is helping kids receive wonderful books to read and enjoy."
