EcoDeVita Removes Cigarette Toxins and Odors

Shikoku International announced today that their indoor plaster products, EcoDeVita™ KRT and KRM, significantly reduce cigarette smoke odors and neutralize some cancer-causing chemicals. The products contain diatomaceous earth and other materials that attract and chemically alter formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, rendering them harmless.

While most states and large cities have enacted smoking bans in bars and restaurants, many important tourist destinations, such as Las Vegas and Miami, continue to allow smoking in bars, casinos, hotels and other public spaces. And now, as if 2nd-hand smoke weren't bad enough, a recent study published in the medical journal Pediatric has identified the health impacts from 3rd-hand smoke, which is the residue of cigarette smoke that clings to walls and fabrics, giving smoked-in rooms their characteristic unpleasant odor.

"This is a tremendously important issue in the effort to create healthy indoor air, especially in the hospitality industry where many properties continue to allow smoking," said Yoshi Oyama, General Manager of Shikoku International.

Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are two of the many toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke, and are responsible for much of its acrid smell. These chemicals are also found in adhesives, and are emitted from many common materials such as new carpets, cabinetry, and furniture.

EcoDeVita™ KRT, for ceilings, and KRM, for walls, are beautiful traditional Japanese plasters that are also powerful air cleaners. They adsorb toxic aldehyde compounds and break them down through chemical reaction and can continue to do so for several years.
