Marlboro College Graduate School will host a free, public lecture by Joe Sibilia, entitled "Authentic Leadership," at 5:00 pm on Friday, October 9 as part of its MBA in Managing for Sustainability Featured Speaker Series.

As a visionary of the socially responsible business movement, Joe Sibilia is founder and CEO of Meadowbrook Lane Capital (MBLC), described by the Wall Street Journal as a "socially responsible investment bank" specializing in turning values into valuation. He is also the CEO of www.CSRwire.com, the social responsibility newswire service that distributes and archives corporate social responsibility/sustainability news to journalists, analysts, investors, activists, academics, public relations and investor relations professionals worldwide. Through MLBC, Joe has worked with a number of Socially Responsible Companies and has been widely recognized for his work in attempting to take Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream private, while successfully preserving many of the founders' social initiatives, and advancing the connection between good corporate citizenship and increased share value. Throughout his career, Joe has purchased and sold nineteen of his own companies.

He was previously the Founder and President of Marty's Juice Creations, which designed and developed proprietary fruit beverage technologies to dispense fruit beverages at food service locations. The creation of these technologies resulted in the elimination of bottles, cans, packaging, and refrigeration, and in 1994 alone, saved 50,880 trees, 20,966,400 gallons of water, 9,974 cubic yards of landfill space, 12,579,840 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy, and 179,712 pounds of effluents from polluting the air, the company was purchased by the Pepsi Cola Co.

Joe also founded the Gasoline Alley Foundation (www.gasolinealley.org), a 501(c) 3 corporation that has incubated forty-three small businesses since 1985 and teaches inner city and/or underprivileged persons to be successful entrepreneurs using socially responsible/sustainable business practices while revitalizing inner city neighborhoods. Joe is the husband of Claire Sullivan and father of three daughters: Kristen, Kendra and Kayla. The Sibilia family lives in Western Massachusetts with their dog, "Finally". He serves on a number of Board of Directors and has been the longest serving Board member of the Social Venture Network.

MARLBORO COLLEGE GRADUATE SCHOOL, BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT, USA Master of Business Administration in Managing for Sustainability The Marlboro MBA combines the core competencies of a traditional MBA program with process and content attuned to social and environmental responsibility, triple or multiple bottom-line performance measurement, a global perspective on commerce and economic justice, and the overall notion of sustainability. There are three particular groups of people for whom the Marlboro MBA is specifically designed:

  • Those who are convinced our society must follow a more sustainable path, and seek knowledge, skills, perspectives, and a network to help them point their business careers in that direction.
  • People who want to immerse themselves in the socially responsible business movement by working at one of the leaders - many of which are located in or near Vermont - or perhaps starting the next trend-setter themselves.
  • People who are interested in becoming a corporate social responsibility (CSR) professional for a corporation, auditing firm, consulting firm, or NGO, working to change the system from within
At 60 credits, this full-scale, accredited MBA can be completed in two years, and does not require students to live near the campus. Its hybrid limited-residency format combines attendance of ten 3-day intensive weekends per year and online coursework. The Marlboro MBA in Managing for Sustainability brings the model pioneered by several West Coast MBA programs to Vermont and the Northeast for the first time. Key features include an emphasis on accounting and finance, systems thinking courses, exploration of the policy and business implications of climate change, priority for clear written and verbal communication, mentoring in personal leadership development, and international study.
