The Levi Strauss Foundation today announced that it will donate a total of $100,000 toward emergency relief efforts to help flood and earthquake victims in Indonesia and the Philippines.

The Foundation will provide a $50,000 grant to Oxfam America, a humanitarian organization working to provide relief to earthquake victims in Indonesia, and an additional $50,000 grant to humanitarian organization World Vision Development Foundation, to help people affected by tropical storm Ketsana "Ondoy" in the Philippines.

"These unexpected tragedies have changed people's lives overnight," said Daniel Lee, Executive Director of Levi Strauss Foundation. "At a time when people have lost their homes, belongings and even loved ones, we want to do what we can to help. By working with Oxfam America and World Vision, we can help provide relief for those who need it most."

Two major disasters struck Asia this past week. The city of Padang was devastated by a 7.6 earthquake last week, claiming at least 1,100 lives and destroying homes throughout the region. Oxfam America is working to provide immediate disaster relief on the ground to people in need, including emergency shelter supplies for 1,000 families who have been hit worst by the earthquake. The organization is also assessing other essentials that impacted people will need, including water, sanitation and food.

Just days before the earthquake in Padang, tropical storm Ketsana triggered landslides and mass flooding in Manila and the nearby areas, impacting nearly two million people. World Vision is working with the Philippines Coast Guard to provide immediate necessities to 20,000 families - food, blankets and mosquito netting (essential in a tropical setting with stagnant water dangers).

For nearly 60 years, the Levi Strauss Foundation has been committed to bettering global communities where the company has a business presence. The company has a long history of supporting disaster relief dating back to the Great Fire of 1871 in Chicago. Since 2001, Levi Strauss & Co., together with the Levi Strauss Foundation, has given nearly $3 million in disaster relief grants.
