Alexandria, Va. - June 9, 2009 - Gifts In Kind International (www.giftsinkind.org) today announced that Cindy Hallberlin has been appointed to the position of president and chief executive officer. She will replace Barry Anderson, who served as the interim president and CEO for eight months during the search process.

"The Gifts In Kind International Board is thrilled to welcome Cindy Hallberlin as our new president and CEO," said Gifts In Kind Board Chairman Mike Kelley. "She brings with her many years of experience and an impressive track record of effective project management, business development and social responsibility initiatives. She is the right person to lead Gifts In Kind International. We look forward to working with Cindy as she continues the organization's strong record of empowering charitable groups and helping businesses both give back to the community and address business challenges through product giving."

Prior to joining Gifts In Kind, Ms. Hallberlin served as the chief ethics, diversity and accountability officer for U.S. Foodservice, a national broadline distributor serving the multi-billion-dollar foodservice industry. She possesses more than 27 years of experience in labor and employment law, alternative dispute resolution, public relations, ethics and compliance and corporate social responsibility. Throughout her career, Ms. Hallberlin has been recognized for tackling tough business challenges and successfully building and leading teams to reach their business objectives. As the chief ethics and compliance officer following a $1 billion fraud, she contributed to the cultural transformation of U.S. Foodservice by developing exceptional ethics training and awareness programs, a risk assessment strategy and a model code of conduct. Prior to joining U.S. Foodservice, Ms. Hallberlin developed and successfully managed the U.S. Postal Service's REDRESS employment mediation program, which successfully resolved more than 80 percent of discrimination claims and resulted in $60 million in cost avoidance.

In 2008, she developed the first nationwide corporate philanthropy program at U.S. Foodservice that aimed at eradicating hunger in the United States. The "Full Plates, Full Lives" program raised more than $4 million in cash and product donations for Feeding America. Ms. Hallberlin holds an undergraduate degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a law degree from Antioch University.

In the September 6, 2000, New York Times business section, Ms. Hallberlin was recognized for the work she did while employed with the U.S. Postal Service. Her leadership was also highlighted in the book, Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way: Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage (Prentice Hall, 2002). For more than 15 years she has served as a board member and chair of Dance Place, a United Way agency.
