ATLANTA, GA. - May 19, 2009 "“ A growing number of major companies are participating in the American Cancer Society's 2009 Corporate Impact Conference, June 18-19 in Chicago. AT&T, Bayer, GE Healthcare, Hewitt Associates, Humana, KPMG LLP, Quest Diagnostics, sanofi-aventis, United Airlines, Walgreens and the Wal-Mart Foundation are among the companies and organizations involved with the planning process and/or presentations at the conference, which is designed as a unique, single-setting environment to empower companies and their employees to engage in changing the course of cancer.

Registration information, the complete conference workshop agenda and a list of confirmed presenters are also available at acsworkplacesolutions.com/impactconference.asp.

Impact: Companies Changing the Course of Cancer, sponsored by sanofi-aventis and Quest Diagnostics, delivers two conference tracks for corporate practitioners who can impact results for either their company's overall health management, health and wellness programs, or for its corporate citizenship initiatives.

Track one focuses on how companies can reduce the burden of cancer by implementing scientifically-sound wellness programs and high-quality support for cancer screening and care. Track two addresses engagement in corporate community involvement and corporate support for employees’ efforts to eliminate cancer through volunteerism and employee giving initiatives.

Many companies have identified cancer as a significant factor in determining the success of their current and future health and financial outcomes, as well as those within the communities in which they operate. As the American Cancer Society is uniquely positioned to be a critical ally for information and solutions, the Corporate Impact Conference has assembled a comprehensive, interactive agenda; a roster of prominent presenters from medicine, corporate wellness, community involvement and philanthropy; and innovative tools and programs to motivate employees to stay well by reducing their risk of cancer.

Otis W. Brawley, M.D., the American Cancer Society’s chief medical officer, will address the "State of Cancer and its Effect on Companies" during the opening plenary session. Ken Thorpe, Ph.D., the executive director of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, will deliver Thursday evening’s (June 18) keynote address.

Directed by premier business and educational leaders, Corporate Impact Conference attendees will engage in seminars that address, among numerous pivotal topics:

  • creation of successful strategies that increase employee use of health benefits
  • new trends in company-wide social issues involvement
  • creation of a "culture of health" within the organization
  • how global health equals global wealth
  • alignment of volunteerism and philanthropic goals
  • best practices in employee giving campaigns
  • case studies of ROI models across industry type and size
  • design of optimal health plans to prevent and treat cancer
About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing nearly $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
