BEIJING, June 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) announced today a US$27,000 (approximately RMB 189,000) contribution to Beijing Youth Development Foundation (BYDF) to support the education of disadvantaged children in China. BYDF is a charity that aims to improve educational conditions and provide financial aid for needy students in China.

Established in 1994, BYDF has built more than 300 schools in 30 provinces, cities and autonomous regions in China. It has also provided financial aid to more than 70,000 needy primary and secondary school students, as well as more than 6,000 university undergraduates.

The contribution from AT&T will be used to fund BYDF's upcoming project to equip Wang Tuan Town Dong Tan Primary School with a better learning environment and improved facilities. The school is located at Wang Tuan Town, Tongxin County, Ningxia Province. It is the only school in this suburban area and provides educational needs for children from several hundred villages within a radius of four kilometers. Its existing classrooms and facilities cannot accommodate the growing number of students. With AT&T's contribution, a new classroom and washroom will be built, and existing facilities will be renovated.

"With the rapid growth of the national economy, the Chinese government has increased its investment in and support of educational initiatives," said Chen Shu Hui, chief officer of Beijing Youth Development Foundation. "There are still some poverty areas that could do with more support. We hope more and more enterprises will follow AT&T's example to help children in underprivileged areas complete their education and realize their potential."

Sainti Li, AT&T Greater China Group general manager, commented that AT&T was committed to helping charitable organizations create improved learning opportunities and to meeting the needs of diverse communities around the world. "We are delighted to be working with the Beijing Youth Development Foundation to provide students with a better learning environment. We commend the foundation for its efforts, and we look forward to watching the students reach their full potential in the new and improved facilities."
