PITTSBURGH--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) released its 2005 Sustainability Highlights through a new Sustainability website detailing the Company's commitment to simultaneously achieving financial success, environmental excellence, and social responsibility to deliver net long-term benefits to all stakeholders.

The new site -- www.Alcoa.com/sustainability -- summarizes how Alcoa lives its Values while operating its businesses, making each community in which it operates a better place.

The new online reporting, part of the new site, gives stakeholders access to more detailed and current information on sustainability performance, and is supplemented by a year-end highlights document. The format makes sustainability reporting more relevant and timely by allowing for periodic updates throughout the year, and eliminates the need for the paper, ink, and distribution large print-based reports require.

Regional and community reports outlining Alcoa's accomplishments, challenges, and goals in specific areas in which it operates also are available online. A regional report for China summarizing intentions for development there was published for the first time. Reports from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Fjardaal (Iceland), Jamalco (Jamaica), Suralco (Suriname)--and many communities--can also be downloaded by going to www.alcoa.com.

A few of the sustainability accomplishments detailed in the corporate report:

  • Alcoa was named one of the most sustainable corporations in the world in 2005 and 2006 at a ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

  • Alcoa was named one of the top green companies in the world by BusinessWeek magazine and the Climate Group in recognition of our performance reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • The company revised its 2020 Strategic Framework for Sustainability--a set of long-range goals to be achieved by 2020, with routine measurement to track progress--to make it more comprehensive in terms of sustainability principles. During 2006 the company is undertaking external consultation on the Framework.

  • By the end of 2005, we achieved a landfilled waste reduction of more than 50% from a 2000 baseline. This continued to exceed our short-term target of a 50% reduction by 2007.

  • Alcoa Foundation created the Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Program to advance knowledge in the field of conservation and sustainability through fellowships to outstanding academics and practitioners from non-governmental organizations.

  • Combined, Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation contributed in 2005 US$39,981,462 to the communities in which it operates, including more than $3 million in recognition of employee volunteerism.

Alcoa welcomes feedback about its sustainability performance and reporting structure. Emails should be sent to sustainability@alcoa.com, or complete an online survey at www.alcoa.com/sustainabilitysurvey.
