Bank of America Announces Energy Initiatives

Bank of America today announced the following initiatives within the company to promote energy conservation.

Low-interest financing for bank employees for energy-saving home improvements, such as upgrading insulation and weather stripping, installing programmable thermostats to ensure efficient home heating and air conditioning, and converting homes to solar energy.

Signs at various office buildings will be turned off, or lighting will be reduced, during evening hours. Signs have already been turned off at several San Francisco locations, including the bank's Clock Tower building near the Bay Bridge, a Bank of America building at Van Ness and Market streets, and the Concord Technology Center. In Southern California, signs have been turned off at buildings such as the bank's downtown Los Angeles and San Diego towers.

Through ongoing communication, the bank is asking employees to turn off computer monitors, printers, photocopiers and other equipment during evening hours when offices are closed, and to turn off lights in conference rooms and offices when they are not in use.

"While shutting off illuminated signs will impact our advertising at night, this simply is the right thing to do," said Liam E. McGee, president, Bank of America California. "Our company has a long-standing commitment to conservation. We're taking extra steps to reduce energy consumption by asking employees to make every effort to conserve energy both in the office and at home."

The bank will reduce interior lighting and implement other conservation measures in selected buildings, as long as this does not compromise safety for bank customers and employees.

"Finding solutions for California's energy needs will help ensure the continued strength of our state's economy," added McGee.

Since 1995, Bank of America has reduced energy usage in offices, transaction processing facilities and data centers in California and communities throughout the country where the bank does business. For example, at its San Francisco data center, the bank has reduced annual energy consumption by more than 13 percent, and by more than 22 percent at its Los Angeles data center. This is equivalent to approximately 18,500 megawatt hours of saved energy at just those two facilities. The bank's energy conservation effort reduces the amount of electricity drawn from the state's power grid, freeing it for such needs as hospitals and other essential services.

Bank of America stock (ticker: BAC) is listed on the New York, Pacific and London stock exchanges.
