Best Buy Announces $2.7 Million in Scholarships to Outstanding High School Seniors Nationwide

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2007--As part of its ongoing efforts to promote engaging learning experiences and strengthening communities in which its employees work and live, Best Buy has announced the recipients of its annual scholarship award program. A total of 1,742 graduating high school seniors across the United States will receive more than $2.7 million in scholarships in 2007.

Sixteen seniors will each receive a $10,000 scholarship. Their winning essays can be found in the "community relations" link at www.bestbuy.com. Recipients are:

-- Evan Eliason - Concordia Academy, Roseville, Minn.

-- Daniel Bernal - Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, Tucson, Ariz.

-- Jason Lipshin - Esperanza High School, Anaheim, Calif.

-- Jarett Heskett - Sierra High School, Manteca, Calif.

-- Carolina Bracamonte - Hoover High School, San Diego, Calif.

-- Elaine Trinh - Silver Creek High School, San Jose, Calif.

-- Alexandrya Holley - MacArthur High School, Irving, Tex.

-- Katherine Throneburg - Charlotte Country Day School, Charlotte, N.C.

-- Austin Hook - Divine Child High School, Dearborn, Mich.

-- Emily Rourk - Summerville High School, Summerville, S.C.

-- Laura Irastorza - Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, Miami, Fla.

-- Kyle Amber - Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Pinecrest, Fla.

-- Ryan Gavigan - Vineland High School, Vineland, N.J.

-- Stephanie Cole - Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School, St. Louis, Mo.

-- Danielle Zaragoza - Professional Performing Arts School, New York, N.Y.

-- Zakiya Williams - Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep Academy, Chicago, Ill.

In addition, 1,726 students will each receive $1,500 scholarships. Funds will be distributed in August 2007 to all recipients.

This year, Best Buy received more than 67,500 completed applications for its scholarship award program. Applicants are evaluated based on academic records and community involvement; each finalist application included a school transcript, as well as references from relevant community service organizations and verification of volunteer hours and scope of involvement. Recipients also must be committed to attending an accredited college or university for the fall 2007 semester. Applications for the 2008 Best Buy scholarship program will be made available in January 2008 at www.bestbuy.com/communityrelations.
