NEW YORK, N.Y. - America SCORES today announced that it received a grant of $120,000 from Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) to equip inner-city students for success in the technology-driven world through computer skills development.

America SCORES is the only national non-profit organization to use after-school workshops on soccer, creative writing and community service to promote the physical, social and educational well-being of 8- to 12-year old urban youths. The program focuses on helping children who are at risk of academic failure, while revitalizing their communities by recruiting teachers, parents, and community members as volunteers.

Support from CA will enable America SCORES to expand its program to include technical training that will contribute to the academic, and, ultimately, workplace success of the participating children. Specifically, CA's grant will outfit new computer labs with hardware and software, add kid-focused web pages to the America SCORES website (www.AmericaSCORES.org) and integrate technology into educational and community service materials. For example, students will research their service projects on the Internet and use computers to create presentations on those projects that will be featured at community service festivals around the country.

"Technical skills are vital tools for success in today's workplace, yet students in low-income areas, who have the most to overcome, often lack access to technical resources. By providing computer labs and training, CA is making academic and workplace achievement a more obtainable goal for thousands of children each year."
