Freeport, Texas - The 41st Annual Keep Texas Beautiful Conference was held recently with The Dow Chemical Company was the platinum Education Sponsor of this event. The partnership between Dow and Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) demonstrates Dow's ongoing efforts to contribute to community sustainability and success, aligning with Dow's 2015 Sustainability Goals.
KTB is a statewide nonprofit, committed to litter prevention, beautification and waste reduction. Since 2007 Dow State Government Affairs Director, Steve Hazlewood, has been the President of the Board of Directors for KTB and has provided his expertise and strong commitment to leading the organization in achieving its mission - to educate and engage Texans to take responsibility for improving their community.
At this year's annual conference, Hazlewood presented the President's Award to State Rep. Warren Chisum. The President's Award is given at the discretion of the Keep Texas Beautiful President to recognize outstanding individual support of the organization. Rep. Chisum has been a member of the Texas House of Representatives for 18 years and currently chairs the House Appropriations Committee of the Texas Legislature. He supports KTB through the Keep Texas Beautiful Skeet Shoot competition and the Keep Texas Beautiful Golf Classic. In addition Chisum and his wife Omega attend many of the Keep Texas Beautiful Conferences and seminars.
The conference brought KTB staff and volunteers together from across the state to learn different ideas about improving the environment of their communities. Some of the event highlights include the "Leading Green" presentation by keynote speaker John Schuster and the talk by Mike Groman about the nation's most successful and comprehensive urban green program which is located in Philadelphia.
Dow plays an active role in supporting the KTB through volunteering and sponsorships of numerous programs. For instance, the Water IQ program utilized community media and events to encourage thousands of community members to conserve water through simple, cost-saving actions.
Dow has also been a partner at KTB's annual fund raising events encouraging other industries to support and participate with this organization. At the local level, Dow funded community Green Events in Brazoria County by offering supplies to all KTB affiliates. On the educational front, Dow is partnering with KTB to develop a new module about appropriate household hazardous waste management and disposal as part of the Waste in Place school curriculum.
