SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 2007--Three hundred high school seniors today were named as semifinalists of the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) 2007. The STS, America's oldest and most prestigious science competition, is often called the "Junior Nobel Prize." Each of the 300 Intel STS semifinalists receives $1,000, with an additional $1,000 going to their respective schools, resulting in $600,000 in total awards. This year's entrants hail from 46 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and represent 487 schools.

Over the past 66 years, the STS has produced winners of the world's most prestigious academic honors. Six former finalists have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. STS finalists have also been awarded the Fields Medal, the National Medal of Science and MacArthur Foundation Fellowships.

On Jan. 31, 40 of the 300 semifinalists will be named as finalists. On March 8 these finalists will travel to Washington for a weeklong event. At a black-tie gala at the end of the week, 10 students will be chosen for scholarships totaling $500,000 with the top winner receiving a $100,000 scholarship. All finalists will be awarded a laptop run with the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo processor, and have the opportunity to display their research for the general public at the prestigious National Academy of Sciences.

Science Service, a nonprofit organization which works to advance the understanding and appreciation of science, has administered the STS since its inception in 1942. The 1,705 entrants represent record participation for the Intel sponsorship, which began in 1998. Since assuming the title sponsorship, Intel has increased the annual awards and scholarships from $207,000 to $1.25 million. Intel's sponsorship of the Intel STS is part of the Intel(R) Education initiative to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands.
