MOORESVILLE, N.C.--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) have named Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE: LOW) the ENERGY STAR 2004 Retail Partner of the Year. The home improvement retailer was cited for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through promoting energy-efficient products and educating consumers and employees on the value of the ENERGY STAR program. Lowe's accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 2.

"To be honored as Retail Partner of the Year for a second year running validates our ongoing efforts to educate our customers about products that will not only save them money, but help conserve valuable natural resources," said Dale Pond, Lowe's senior executive vice president of merchandising and marketing. "We all share in this responsibility, and as the second largest appliance retailer in the country, we are proud to take a leadership role in promoting solutions that benefit both our customers and the environment."

Lowe's, a partner in the program since 2001, is being honored for its commitment to promoting products that earn the ENERGY STAR. The ENERGY STAR mark can be found on products sold at Lowe's, including lighting, appliances, programmable thermostats and windows that meet strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and DOE. Consumer education about the advantages of ENERGY STAR qualified products and store employee training are hallmarks of Lowe's programs.

"ENERGY STAR simply couldn't attain its goals without partners like Lowe's," said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division. "This award is our chance to recognize exceptional partners who really go above and beyond in helping Americans
find products for their homes that help protect the environment while saving energy."

In 2003, Lowe's offered eight ENERGY STAR "How To" clinics that allowed customers to learn about products that help conserve electricity and water and make their homes more efficient. Lowe's also increased the sale of ENERGY STAR qualified products by more than 30 percent, exceeding its goal of 20 percent set at the beginning of the year. The result in energy savings generated by ENERGY STAR qualified products sold at Lowe's in 2003 equals a consumer savings in excess of $55 million in energy costs (electric and gas). The pollution prevented as a result of these sales is the equivalent of planting nearly 117,000 acres of trees or removing more than 74,000 cars from the road.

"It shows that people are getting the ENERGY STAR message," said Michael Chenard, Lowe's director of environmental affairs. "It is possible to save money and the environment, and the ENERGY STAR program clearly and effectively delivers that message to our customers."

Lowe's was selected for the award from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program. The average savings per household for switching to ENERGY STAR qualified products can equal a 30 percent reduction in energy bills, or about $400 per year.
