The May Department Stores Company ([NYSE: MAY) today named Anne H. Carter vice president of diversity for the corporation, a new position reporting to Brian L. Keck, senior vice president of human resources. The appointment is effective June 26, 2000.
Ms. Carter joined May in 1985 as a sales associate with the former G. Fox division, and became an executive trainee three months later. She held a number of buying positions in different businesses with G. Fox before moving into merchandise planning. She was promoted to manager for planning at Filene's in 1992, and to divisional sales manager over shoes, accessories, sportswear, juniors' and men's for Filene's in 1993. She was appointed to her current position as vice president and director of merchandise information systems at Kaufmann's in 1997.

Ms. Carter holds a BA from Yale University. She is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and is married to the Rev. David S. Carter originally of Hartford, Conn. They have three children: Evelyn, Rebecca, and David Joshua.
