The St. Paul Companies Inc. Foundation today announced grants totaling $3.7 million to assist 102 nonprofit organizations. Of these grants, sixteen, totaling $835,000, were awarded to organizations seeking to advance the effectiveness of the nonprofit, voluntary sector.

"Our Foundation is unique in that we focus some of our grant resources on advancing the nonprofit, voluntary sector. While this difference may seem subtle, it can make a meaningful difference for nonprofits," said Ron McKinley, vice president of The St. Paul Companies Inc. Foundation, and executive director of The St. Paul Companies Maryland Foundation. "It is important to support organizations created for and by the communities they serve. By helping nonprofits strengthen and stabilize their organizations, The Foundation is able to effect broader, long lasting and significant change."

Two of the more notable grants awarded to advance the nonprofit, voluntary sector were made to the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers (RAG's) and the Central Maryland Volunteer Center.

Comprised of 29 member regional associations of grantmakers, the Forum of RAG's launched a nationwide initiative to promote the growth of philanthropy with a $60,000 grant from The Foundation. The Forum will host a Summit and National Symposium aimed at initiating a highly visible national discussion to aid Americans in making wise giving decisions and to help the nation make wise policy decisions affecting philanthropic and charitable giving.

"The timing of this project is significant in that we are on the threshold of a substantial transfer of wealth within the context of philanthropy," said McKinley. "Over the next decade, more than $10 trillion will change hands from World War II'ers to baby boomers. A nationwide forum to encourage thoughtful giving will enhance the capacity of all St. Paul Companies' grantees."

Through The St. Paul Companies Maryland Foundation, a grant of $80,000 was made to support the creation of the Central Maryland Volunteer Center in Baltimore, Md. The newly established center, two years in the making, will open it doors in April under the name "Volunteer Central" to serve as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities within Baltimore City and the five surrounding counties. In addition, the center will provide support to area nonprofits with training sessions, volunteer orientations and by periodically evaluating programs to raise the quality of volunteer opportunities throughout the region. This award represents the second installment on a two-year grant made in 1998.

In the fourth quarter of 1999, the 102 grants were made in four focus areas to help
create strong, healthy, vital communities:

* 16 grants to advancing the nonprofit, voluntary sector, totaling $835,000;
* 24 grants to arts and culture, totaling $538,000;
* 23 grants to community development, totaling $735,000; and
* 39 grants to education, totaling $1,607,700.
