SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2005--SBC Communications Inc., once again, has been named as a top employer for minorities in recent surveys published in Fortune magazine and LATINA Style magazine. In addition, the company leads the telecommunications industry in the September release of Hispanic Business magazine's Top 40 Companies.

"We are proud of our strong record on diversity and honored, once again, to be recognized as a top employer for minorities," said Karen Jennings, senior executive vice president of human resources and communications for SBC Communications Inc. "Diversity creates a better business environment at SBC Communications and has made our company a preferred employer and business partner."

The Fortune survey was published in a special section of the magazine and based on research conducted by SmartRevenue Research, focusing on Fortune 1000 companies and the 200 largest privately held U.S. companies. Companies were evaluated and selected based on their workforce and marketplace diversity initiatives. In past Fortune surveys, SBC Communications has been an industry leader on Fortune's Best Companies for Minorities list.

The company was also named as one of the 50 best companies for Latinas to work by LATINA Style magazine and ranked as No. 3 in Hispanic Business magazine's Diversity Report: Top 40 Companies. These surveys evaluated how companies reach out to Hispanics in recruitment, career development, procurement and community involvement.

SBC Communications' commitment to diversity can also be seen in numerous other honors and awards received this year for its world-class diversity and inclusion initiatives. These honors include DiversityInc magazine's Top 50 Companies for Diversity and Top 10 Companies for Latinos, as well as recognition in DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity Hall of Fame. Being named to the Hall of Fame is a result of having appeared on the magazine's annual list for the past five years.

Other honors include:

-- Top 100 Companies, Hispanic magazine

-- 75 Most Powerful African-Americans in Corporate America, Black
Enterprise magazine

-- HACR Corporate Index, Hispanic Association on Corporate
Responsibility

-- Latin Business Corporate Diversity Honor Roll

-- DiversityFirst Award, Texas Diversity Council

-- 50 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business,
Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine

-- 80 Elite Hispanic Women, Hispanic Business magazine

SBC Communications is also committed to diversity in the marketplace and has received top national recognition this year for its efforts. For more than three decades, the SBC family of companies has looked for opportunities to work with diversity suppliers in all aspects of the business. In 2004, SBC Communications spent 17.2 percent of its total procurement spend, or $1.8 billion, with diverse vendors, incorporating minority-owned, women-owned and disabled-veteran-owned business enterprises in the corporate supply chain.

"The awards we have received this year are a true testament to the company's leadership and legacy of inclusion," said Joan Kerr, executive director of SBC Supplier Diversity Programs. "Supplier diversity is critical to our success as our customers, in both public and private sectors, are increasingly requiring supplier diversity initiatives in support of their supply chains. Additionally, SBC Communications is committed to providing economic empowerment in the communities we serve."

Earlier this year, the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) named SBC Communications as one of America's Top Corporations for Women's Business Enterprises. This award recognizes U.S. companies for breaking down barriers that impede women-owned business enterprises from gaining fair access to procurement opportunities.

"SBC Communications has helped set the standard for world-class supplier diversity programs," said Susan Bari, president of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. "The company has won WBENC's Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises award every year since its inception. SBC Communications is truly one of the pioneer companies dedicated to ensuring that women-owned businesses get the fair chance they deserve to bid for and win corporate business."

Other supplier diversity recognition includes:

-- National Patriot Award, Association for Service Disabled
Veterans

-- Top Corporations for Multicultural Business,
DiversityBusiness.com

-- Best in California Diversity Contracts, Greenlining Institute
Survey

-- Corporation of the Year Award, Connecticut Minority Supplier
Development Council (CMSDC)

The company's approach to diversity has resulted in its being recognized as a leader in the telecommunications industry. By positioning diversity as a strategic initiative that meets bottom-line results and by promoting inclusion, the company ensures that its employees and minority-owned, women-owned, and disabled-veteran-owned businesses feel valued and have continued opportunities to grow and succeed.
