Two top publications for the Hispanic community, Hispanic and Hispanic Business, have included SBC among their annual rankings of top employers. The magazines recognize SBC's efforts to provide opportunities for Hispanic employees and its broader commitment to promoting diversity in the workplace, marketplace and the communities it serves.

The 2002 Hispanic Corporate 100, published in the magazine's January/February issue, honors leading corporations who foster diversity by supporting Hispanic employees, businesses and organizations. SBC has made the Hispanic Corporate 100 list every year since its inception in 1989.

SBC is also among Hispanic Business magazine's 2002 Corporate Elite, which recognizes the role of Hispanic executives in top corporations that create opportunities for career growth. The Corporate Elite is published in the magazine's January/February issue.

More than 24,000 Hispanics are employed at SBC. Nearly 10 percent of the company's board members and nine percent of corporate officers are Hispanic. The company has long promoted the advancement and recruitment of minority employees through career advancement programs, scholarships, the SBC Center for Learning and other professional development initiatives. In addition, employee groups such as HACEMOS (Hispanic Association of Communications Employees of SBC) promote professional development and community involvement at SBC.

"Diversity is fundamental to our success," said Patricia Diaz Dennis, senior vice president, regulatory and public affairs. "SBC's strong, active commitment to diversity helps us to respond better to our customers and employees."

SBC's commitment to diversity extends beyond the workforce. In 2001, through corporate contributions and the SBC Foundation, the company gave more than $12 million to organizations serving the Hispanic community. In addition, SBC spends more than 21 percent of its procurement dollars annually with diverse businesses, including Hispanic-owned businesses.

SBC is a national leader in fostering diversity. In its 2001 HACR Corporate Governance Study, the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility recognized SBC among only 15 percent of Fortune 1,000 Companies with Hispanics in top positions. HACR also cited SBC as the telecommunications industry leader in Latino representation on its board of directors.

In 2001, SBC was named one of Latina Style's Top Companies for Latinas and received the Hispanics in Philanthropy Association's Premio Avance Award for its philanthropic support of Hispanic organizations. Last year, SBC also received the Center for Responsibility in Business's Corporate Conscience Award for Employee Empowerment: Workforce Diversity and Fortune magazine named SBC one of the 50 Best Companies for Minorities for the third consecutive year.
