NEWARK, NJ - Verizon New Jersey will implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote increased energy efficiency as a result of an agreement signed today with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU).

Under the agreement, Verizon pledged to support the state's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 baseline levels by 2005 through voluntary energy-conservation measures. The company already has completed an analysis to benchmark these emissions from its facilities, equipment and motor vehicle fleet.

"Verizon has a record of implementing energy-saving initiatives and recycling measures, and we're committed to supporting the state's program to protect the environment in the communities we serve," said Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey. In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program recognized Verizon New Jersey's efforts to conserve energy.

Verizon's Bone, DEP Commissioner Bradley Campbell, and BPU President Jeanne Fox signed the New Jersey Global Climate Change Covenant in Trenton at the Governor's Energy Summit.

In March, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy gave Verizon Communications their most prestigious Energy Star honor, the Corporate Commitment Award, in recognition of the company's industry-leading energy efficiency program.
