Trigen Energy Corporation has entered into an exclusive agreement to become the total energy provider for the NYCyberCenter currently under development by The Durst Organization on mid-town Manhattan's West Side. Under the agreement, Trigen will be the owner of the NYCyberCenter's unique, ultra-high efficient energy system and is responsible for the final design, construction, operation and overall performance to the targeted data-center tenants.
Even with this exceptionally high reliability, the energy rates to be charged to tenants will be competitive with the prevailing electric rates in Manhattan. Equally important, Trigen is leveraging its expertise in developing highly efficient energy facilities for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers to ensure that the NYCyberCenter represents the most efficient and environmentally advanced facility of its kind in the industry. With a maximum NOx emission rate of 2.5 ppm or .01 lb/MWh, the energy system would produce emissions equivalent to less than 10% of the emissions of a comparable local utility electrical generation facility to produce an equivalent amount of energy or cooling.
According to Douglas Durst, president of The Durst Organization, "The partnership with Trigen is critical to the success of our highly reliable NYCyberCenter in the environmentally sustainable tradition to which we are committed."
Commenting on the selection by The Durst Organization, Richard Kessel, president and chief executive officer of Trigen said, "We are extremely pleased to join The Durst Organization and the outstanding team of dedicated experts that has been put together to develop this very exciting project. As a leader in the development of innovative energy projects, this is yet another example of how we are able to leverage our technical, financial and creative resources to meet customer needs."
The energy system is expected to be constructed with 47 MW of electricity capacity and 16,000 tons of chilling to support the first phase of the 300,000 square foot NYCyberCenter. Trigen will be responsible for final design, permitting, procurement, construction management, installation, operation and overall performance of the equipment.
Other partners in the project are Fox & Fowle Architects, Severud Associates, structural consultants, Einhorn, Yafee & Prescott, mechanical, electrical & plumbing consultants,
NK Engineers Inc., mechanical and electrical layout design consultants, Tishman Construction Corporation of New York and Barnes Wentworth, fiber optic engineering consultants.
The Durst Organization is one of the largest privately owned commercial real estate companies that has developed, built and managed properties in the New York City area for over 85 years.
Trigen is a leading developer, owner and operator of industrial, commercial, institutional and district energy systems in North America. Trigen combines the use of highly efficient energy technologies including combined heat and power (CHP) systems with flexible, customer-centered business structures to deliver innovative and reliable utility solutions. By reducing the amount of fuel consumed and the air pollution emitted into the environment, every day Trigen demonstrates that economic and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand. Trigen is wholly owned by Elyo, a subsidiary of Tractebel, the energy arm of Suez.
