ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A recycling challenge is turning used cell phones, ink jet cartridges and laser toners into financial support, funding clinical services for people with developmental disabilities in the New York State area.

The recycling program is sponsored by Easter Seals New York - Western Region and EnviroSmart (a division of Nu-kote International).

The challenge is designed to make it as easy as possible for people to participate. Used materials can be dropped off at free collection boxes located at businesses throughout the Rochester and New York area. A complete list of locations is available online at www.ny.easter-seals.western.org.

Businesses and individuals throughout New York that cannot make it to one of the collection sites can send their used cell phones, ink jet cartridges and laser toners directly to the Easter Seals office, 249 W. Commercial St., East Rochester, NY 14445 through Earth Day, April 22.

Recycling cell phones and printer cartridges is part of the solution to a growing electronic waste issue. Estimates show approximately 100 million cell phones, 630 million ink jet cartridges and 70 million laser toner cartridges will become obsolete each year. Recycling and remanufacturing puts the materials back into the economy, rather than into landfills.

Groups like EnviroSmart are helping worthy organizations like Easter Seals benefit from the recycling, too. In the last 10 years, the EnviroSmart program has paid more than $17 million to businesses, schools and charities that help them collect the used phones and cartridges. Returned cartridges are refilled and refreshed so they can be used again.

The funds Easter Seals New York receives will help provide programs and services to children and adults with disabilities and other special needs, along with their families.

For more than 80 years, Easter Seals staff and volunteers have helped those with birth defects, spina bifida, speech impediments and other disabilities to gain dignity, equality and independence.

Businesses or organizations willing to display materials, boxes or plastic Ink-Jet cartridge sleeves for Easter Seals New York, contact: EnviroSmart, 800-688-6465 or Michael Donnelly, Easter Seals New York, 585-264-9550, ext. 305.
