They cited SC Johnson's efforts to reach out to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees and employees with disabilities. The company received praise for its excellent work/life benefits, including first-rate benefits for same-sex domestic partners of employees. The opportunity for employees to provide feedback on managers' "ability to foster a diverse and inclusive work environment," through mandatory annual surveys also drew special mention.

SC Johnson's diversity council meets with employee-resource groups and tracks diversity metrics and progress regularly. Rankings were based primarily on company responses to a survey about four key topics: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Supplier Diversity and Corporate and Organizational Communications. DiversityInc.com evaluated more than 400 applications from businesses, including consumer, B-to-B and industrial businesses, representing 19 industries.  Any company or organization with more than 1,000 employees may apply and there is no fee to enter. Companies are assessed within the context of their industries and employee skill sets.  The questions have predetermined weightings and are evaluated based on ratios of certain questions, such as work-force demographics compared with new-hire demographics, and relativity of one subject to another, such as mentoring best practices and management promotions.
