SC Johnson Earns EPA's SDSI Award

RACINE, WI. - December 5, 2008 - SC Johnson's innovative strategy of using its unique patented Greenlist(TM) process to make products like Windex(R), Pledge(R) or Scrubbing Bubbles(R) with better raw materials, including safer surfactants (detergents), has earned it the U.S. EPA Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI) Award.

Part of the EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) Program, SDSI recognizes the commitment that SC Johnson and other environmental leaders are making to voluntarily commit to the use of safer surfactants, producing safer products as stewards of the environment and public health.

SC Johnson's Greenlist(TM) process is a classification system that goes above and beyond compliance, rating raw materials based on their impact on the environment and human health. Since it was developed in 2001, with input from the EPA, Forum for the Future, university scientists and others, the Greenlist(TM)process has enabled SC Johnson to select better raw materials. It is also available royalty-free to other companies.

SC Johnson assigns a Greenlist(TM) score to each raw material used in its products based on a variety of factors, such as toxicity, biodegradability and more. An ingredient with a 3 rating is considered best, 2 is better and 1 is acceptable. Another resource for evaluating safer surfactants that SC Johnson cross references is CleanGredients, which can found on the Internet at www.cleangredients.org.

Among SC Johnson's Greenlist accomplishments to date include, removing more than 61 million pounds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the environmental footprint of the company's products - the equivalent produced by approximately 656,000 cars in a year. In 2006, SC Johnson received both the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award and Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership in recognition of its Greenlist(TM) process.
