An introduction to "green" production - SC Johnson uses cogeneration turbines to create renewable energy for its largest worldwide factory. The resulting greenhouse gas reductions are like taking 5,200 cars of the road annually.
SC Johnson's new business model in Kenya focuses on services rather than products. With local youth groups, the company formed a cleaning services company. The community benefits from affordable services; the local entrepreneurs gain investment and support for an innovative business they can grow.
Doing what's right - from eliminating CFCs in 1975 to licensing royalty-free its Greenlist™ process in 2007, consumer products maker and family company SC Johnson says it's committed to helping other companies measure and improve their environmental impact.
Beyond complying with regulatory requirements, SC Johnson evaluates all its raw materials to select those that are safer for human health or better for the environment. One example: In 2002 the company eliminated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from its packaging due to poor biodegradability and health concerns.

SC Johnson's report, which was published today, captures insights on sustainable development through third-party Q&As on topics from the environment to social progress. For example, Paul Anastas from Yale discusses opportunities and challenges of implementing green chemistry. SC Johnson limits printed editions of the Public Report and encourages distribution via the Internet, at www.scjohnson.com Again this year the company is making a contribution to Conservation International to help offset the carbon emissions associated with printing and distributing the report. This year's contribution will help protect threatened rain forests and support sustainable activities in northeastern Madagascar. The report uses paper manufactured with renewable wind power, preventing more than 4,600 pounds of air emissions from being generated. It is printed with soy ink, which is naturally low in VOCs.
