IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 2006--Demonstrating its commitment to the environment, Toshiba's Digital Products Division, a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the availability of the company's first RoHS-compatible(1) notebook sold at U.S. retail. Toshiba's Satellite A55-S1064 notebook is currently available at Wal-Mart.

RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substance) is an environmental directive set by the European Parliament that goes into effect on July 1 of this year. The goal of the directive is to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Toshiba unveiled its first RoHS-compatible notebook for the U.S. business channel, the Tecra S3, last October.

"The launch of an RoHS-compatible notebook sold through the world's largest retailer is part of Toshiba's overall commitment to the environment," said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division (DPD), Toshiba America Information Systems. "Toshiba DPD believes strongly in ensuring all our notebooks are compatible with the RoHS standard. It's part of Toshiba Corporation's goal to double its overall product and business process eco-efficiency from 2000 to 2010."

Also designed to meet the EPA's Energy Star requirements for power management, the Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 offers Wal-Mart customers an affordable, well-equipped notebook computer available for under $700.

The Satellite A55-S1064 includes a 1.60-GHz Intel(R) Celeron(R) M Processor(2) 380, 512 MB DDR2 memory(3), 40 GB hard drive(4), a 15-inch TruBrite(TM)-enhanced display, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive and built-in Atheros(R) 802.11 b/g wireless(5) LAN. In addition, the Satellite A55 comes with a one-year standard limited warranty.

"The addition of the RoHS-compatible Toshiba Satellite A55 model gives our customers the option of purchasing a high-quality, high-value product that is also environmentally conscious for the first time from a major U.S. retailer," said John Kooy, Wal-Mart's vice president of electronics. "We are proud to support Toshiba's efforts."

In addition to offering RoHS-compatible notebooks, Toshiba DPD is a participant in the Rethink Initiative, which encourages the recycling of old products. Toshiba also operates a trade-in program that gives customers cash back for their old products.
