As President-Elect Obama Calls on Nation to Serve on MLK Day, VolunteerMatch Prepares to Welcome Millions of New Volunteers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. - January 12, 2009 - The Martin Luther King Day of Service is Monday, January 19. In preparation for what many experts say will be the largest Day of Service in history, VolunteerMatch is reminding individuals, organizations, and business leaders that now is the time to plan their MLK Day activities -- and www.volunteermatch.org is the place to start.

With participation from 62,000 of the nation's nonprofit organizations, VolunteerMatch is the Web's largest and most popular volunteering destination. Since its launch in 1998, the service has grown to support a social network of over two million civic-minded users including the employees, customers and members of some of America's most recognized businesses and institutions.

Last week, President-Elect Barack Obama, together with community leaders and nonprofits from across the nation, called on Americans to follow the lead of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and commit to service and volunteering on the MLK Day of Service. With that call, and the tidal wave of excitement and energy from the recent election, VolunteerMatch is getting ready for one of its biggest days in history.

"Once in a generation, a movement founded in excitement and hope transforms the way Americans come together to strengthen our communities," says Greg Baldwin, president of VolunteerMatch. "A decade ago a similar spirit brought together a group of young professionals to help good people and good causes to connect -- and VolunteerMatch was born. We’re excited to join with our new President in making our national day of service one for the history books."

Any volunteer can use the service to find a local volunteer opportunity, and any nonprofit in need of volunteers can use the service to more efficiently and effectively recruit volunteers. With a recent substantial upgrade to its systems, VolunteerMatch users can now simply enter their city or ZIP code and a few words to describe what they want to do to search the network. This winter VolunteerMatch expects to generate its four millionth volunteer referral.
