"Over the past three years we have planted 40 trees in honor and memory of loved ones", said John Marshall, President of the Marshall Foundation. "The 50,000th tree will commemorate the memory of Michael Riccitello. The Marshall Foundation chose to memorialize Michael after receiving a touching letter from his wife Aino who stated "I wish to recognize his love of nature and the wilderness without which we will not have a future'. Michael died on November 10th on his way home from work, from injuries sustained when a careless driver crossed into his lane, according to his wife.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Today over 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries participate in Earth Day activities.
Earth Day is based on the simple philosophy that ordinary people, acting together, can achieve extraordinary things. "Volunteers working with the Marshall Foundation are making a difference in our community and we want to recognize their special efforts during the Earth Day celebrations", stated John Marshall.
