SAN FRANCISCO, CA. - May 5, 2009 - The call for a new economic model built on local ownership and environmental stewardship has moved to center stage. From small towns to urban centers throughout North America and around the world, communities are mobilizing these core principles of living economies.

The Seventh Annual Conference of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), May 21-23 in Denver, Colorado, will bring together hundreds of entrepreneurs, business owners, community investors, economic development experts, and sustainability leaders to share best practices, discover new connections, and set the course for building local living economies.

"The current economic and environmental climate makes this year's conference the essential event for business, civic, and community leaders. Key strategies for the new economy will be woven throughout every session," says Doug Hammond, BALLE's executive director.

The conference will highlight a broad range of practical tools and inspirational voices, while showcasing the remarkable impact that the 65 BALLE networks and the 22,000 entrepreneurs they represent are having in their communities every day. Leading business and organization experts will provide one-on-one consultation sessions throughout the conference.

At a special gathering prior to the Denver conference, economic developers in the BALLE network will meet for a workshop on "Maximizing the Stimulus: Why Localization Matters and How to Achieve It." The workshop will review how communities can make sure they get the most from federal stimulus dollars.

"The annual BALLE conference is one of the most dynamic and productive events in the sustainable economic development movement," says Don Shaffer, president and CEO of RSF Social Finance, a pioneering nonprofit offering investing, lending, and giving services to individuals and enterprises committed to improving society and the environment. "It is the place to be for business and community leaders who want to build their local economies by redirecting the flow of money from global capital markets to local ones."
