The Importance of Training on and Understanding of the Expression CSR

Dialogue between stakeholders requires a wide range of training on the part of the different types of stakeholders, from what the expression "CSR" actually means to how to behave, how to manage dialogue and the interaction between them. There is a great lack of knowledge amongst senior management, workers' representatives, consumers and NGOs about the expression CSR. As a result workers' representatives and NGOs view it with scepticism and, from the outside, with a certain amount of suspicion. For their part, senior management view it as an additional workload on top of their main duties. These actors often find their role impeded by this lack of knowledge and competence.

To combat this, Spain is beginning to witness CSR-related training initiatives. There is currently quite a proliferation of workshops on what is meant by CSR, corporate governance and reputation. The University of Barcelona, in collaboration with CIES, is offering a Masters in Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Accounting and Auditing (www.mes-d.net). This is the largest training action currently being carried out in Spain on the subject and is a on-line masters. Participating in these two firsts editions are 30 senior managers from France, Spain, Portugal, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, United States and Canada. Everybody can write in his own language but all must read Spanish Language. The result is a multicultural masters on CSR.
