The certification was granted following two phases of field assessments conducted by LEI-accredited assessors in November 2004 and September 2005. The final assessment report was approved on 24 January 2006 by the LEI Expert Panel.
"Being first to achieve LEI certification for plantation forest management affirms that APRIL is a leader in sustainable forest management in the region and that our plantation management practices are in accordance to national and international third-party standards," said Mr A J Devanesan, the President of APRIL. "We will continue to seek external verification and move forward with our bid for international forest certification as part of our continuous improvement strategy."
APRIL is also committed to the protection of HCVF (high conservation value forests), following the Mosaic Plantation concept, which enables it to conserve biodiversity values and create economic benefits for the communities, while also generating renewable fiber supply from previously degraded lands. The company, which has also obtained ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and OHSAS 18001 for health and safety, reforests over 50,000 hectares and grows over 100 million trees annually.
