NEW YORK - The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC) calls for submissions for the 2005 Awards for Business Excellence. The awards, instituted in 1998, recognize outstanding business responses to HIV/AIDS around the world.

The 2005 Awards will be presented at the GBC's Annual Gala Dinner in Washington DC, USA following a two-day global HIV/AIDS simulation, a congressional meeting, and a business leaders meeting. The date is to be confirmed. Companies are invited to submit their entry forms by March 18, 2005.

In 2004, the GBC Awards for Business Excellence were presented in Berlin, Germany on April 21, 2004 by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and World Bank President James Wolfensohn. The awards recognized the work of Anglo American for Leadership, BHP Billiton for Innovation, Coca-Cola Egypt for Community, Siemens for Workplace, and Viacom International for Education and Awareness. In addition, 14 other company programs were commended for their efforts.

"The creativity and savvy of business expertise applied to HIV/AIDS is reflected in the range and quality of the programs we see in these awards. This year, we have five categories of awards to accommodate this range," said Trevor Neilson, Executive Director of the GBC.

Companies taking action on HIV/AIDS are encouraged to send submissions for recognition in the following categories:

  • Business Excellence in the Workplace
  • Business Excellence in the Community
  • Business Excellence for Innovation
  • Business Excellence using Core Competency
  • Individual Business Leadership on HIV/AIDS

"The workplace still remains the key starting point for companies with operations in hard-hit regions. But businesses can use their management expertise to reach into communities, as well as their products and services to support HIV/AIDS programs," Neilson added.

Business has been slow to engage on HIV/AIDS, and there's still a long way to go, but leading companies are far ahead in their efforts, many of whom are demonstrating successful outcomes. These successes are critical to inform how the business community responds to AIDS and also useful for the public sector.
