Verizon Wireless Provides More Than $1.5 Million in Support to Domestic Violence Prevention Agencies in Western U.S.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2007--Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, awarded nearly $780,000 in HopeLine program grants and 2,400 wireless phones to domestic violence agencies in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and El Paso, Texas in 2006. Each HopeLine wireless phone includes one year of prepaid airtime, for a total in-kind value of $718,000.

HopeLine grants awarded in 2006 in Southern California included:

  • Alternatives to Domestic Violence - to build capacity for
    child counseling services

  • Asian Pacific Women's Center - to support bilingual case
    management programs

  • Break The Cycle - to help provide legal services to victims of
    domestic violence

  • Foothill Family Services - to purchase educational videos for
    victims at it shelter

  • Human Options - to support individual and group counseling for
    children and adults

  • Interval House - to expand victim service partnerships with
    police, courts and hospitals

  • South Bay Community Services - to fund child art therapy and
    literacy courses for pre-school-aged children living in its
    shelter

  • Women's Shelter of Long Beach - to support volunteer education
    programs mandated by the state of California

  • YWCA of the San Gabriel Valley - to support volunteer
    education programs mandated by the state of California

Since October of 2001 when Verizon Wireless launched its national recycling program, HopeLine has collected more than 3.5 million phones, nationwide. The program has properly disposed of more than 800,000 pieces of wireless equipment in an environmentally sound way, and refurbished the remaining for resale and reuse. Verizon Wireless customers across the country donated a total of 910,000 no-longer-used wireless phones to HopeLine in 2006.
