SAN FRANCISCO, CA - January 31, 2007 - Since our first day of operation in 1992, Berrett-Koehler Publishers (www.bkconnection.com)(BK) has been a green publisher. It has been a bedrock value of our company for 15 years. But BK hasn't been able to do it by dictating the precise formula of the paper we use, like some of the big New York houses are starting to do. Berrett-Koehler Publishers-and other like-minded independent presses-partner in a collaborative manner with printers and paper producers to reach the goal of producing books using the most ecologically sound paper possible.
Since the company's founding, Berrett-Koehler Publishers has strived to use high-quality, long-lasting recycled paper in all of its books. Preservation of the written word as well as the environment is one of our top goals. All BK books are printed on long-lasting acid free paper. When available we use paper that has been manufactured by environmentally responsible processes. These include using trees grown in sustainable forests, incorporating recycled paper, minimizing chlorine bleaching, or recycling the energy produced at the paper mill.
We partner with two outstanding domestically based printers - Malloy (www.malloy.com) and Hamilton (www.hamiltonprinting.com) - to produce all of our books with the most ecologically sound paper products possible. Each printer uses paper certified by one of the two groups responsible for certifying the content of recycled paper - the Sustainable Forest Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council (www.fscus.org).
Most recently we have struck a deal with two of our vendors: Hamilton Printers and New Leaf Paper (http://www.newleafpaper.com/index.html). All New Leaf paper is made with 100% recycled fiber, 50% post consumer waste, and is processed chlorine free. According to Rick Wilson, BK's Vice President of Design and Production, "By switching to New Leaf paper, we have saved nearly 14 tons of new wood fiber in the last quarter of 2006 alone." BK printed the recently released titles The Big Investment Lie, Capitalism 3.0, Growing Local Value, The Hamster Revolution, Loyal to the Sky, Marketing That Matters, and Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class on New Leaf paper.
It's this kind of collaborative arrangement that led to Berrett-Koehler's selection as a winner in the 18th annual Business Ethics Awards (http://www.thecro.com/?q=node/167) in the category of Stakeholder Accountability from Business Ethics and CRO magazines. The award was given for our "focus on creating quality products in collaboration with employees, business partners, and customers."
