HADDONFIELD, NJ - April 17, 2007 - Says Forbes.com's Kevin Cashman of aspiring chief ethics officers, "One of the surest ways individuals can pursue being the 'other' CEO is through formal training,"
Cashman suggests that membership in organizations like the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE)(www.corporatecompliance.org) is a good way to start networking for high-level compliance positions.
But what if you're not prepared to start at the top?
"The chief compliance officer role can be very lucrative," says the Haddonfield, NJ-based compliance and ethics expert, Joe Murphy. Author of "Building a Career in Compliance and Ethics" (SCCE 2007), Murphy says, "Compliance officers can easily earn six and seven figure salaries. You can do well by doing good, absolutely," he says. "However, compliance executives need adequate resources to be effective."
"To survive in today's marketplace, companies can't just hire chief ethics officers, and think that's enough. They need to support them with manpower," says Murphy. "And of course, they need to understand that the compliance officer and his or her team are essential to the company's competitive strategies."
Murphy, an internationaly-recognized expert on the importance of strong compliance and ethics programs, says he wrote, Building a Career in Compliance and Ethics, because, "I am a bit worried that the need for trained, competent compliance and ethics workers is outstripping the supply. That's why in the book I cover topics such as where to find compliance and ethics training, and what kinds of other careers might transition nicely into compliance and ethics."
The book, published by the SCCE , is available by visiting www.joemurphypc.com , and is the only one of its kind dedicated to finding a job specifically in the compliance and ethics profession and offers a trove of contact information for professional membership groups, training programs, and ideas for how to strengthen existing compliance and ethics programs.
Says Murphy, "It's an exciting time to be in this profession. As companies seek to stay competitive by offering greater transparency, this field is poised to experience a boom, just like IT did a generation ago."
