MINNEAPOLIS, MN - April 16, 2008 - The Will Steger Foundation announced today that it is offsetting its carbon emissions with Carbonfund.org, one of the country's leading carbon offset organizations. In anticipation of the Ellesmere Island Expedition, a facet of its Global Warming 101 initiative, the Will Steger Foundation is offsetting over 100% of its 2008 business operations and travel emissions.

Considering the implications of climate change, carbon offsets through Carbonfund.org are a natural extension of the goal that the Will Steger Foundation is committed to achieving. The Will Steger Foundation has seen firsthand the dramatic effects of global warming on both the environment and the human condition. Its expeditions to the Polar Regions offer a unique view of people and places at the tipping point of climate change. Supported by robust educational and public policy initiatives, the Will Steger Foundation is making a tangible impact on public awareness concerning the threat of global climate change.

In March 2008, six emerging leaders, ages 21-28, joined Will Steger on a 1,400 mile international dogsled expedition across Ellesmere Island. There they are following in the footsteps of legendary polar explorers and will visit ice shelves that have collapsed due to global warming and those that are on the brink of collapse. Crossing fjords, mountain ranges, and sea ice, the Expedition Team will record the impact global warming has had on the northern coast of the third largest and northernmost island in the Canadian Arctic.

To advance state and federal policies that address solutions to global warming, the Will Steger Foundation is mobilizing the public and elected officials through the compelling narrative and credibility of eyewitness accounts. Its programs provide an international platform for furthering education, discussion and civic engagement, offering unique opportunities for public interaction with prominent policy makers, scientists, journalists and business leaders.

"Global warming is going to dominate the future lives of our young people and we have a responsibility to prepare them for this by teaching them what it is and where the solutions lie," said Will Steger - Polar Explorer, Environmentalist, Educator, and President and Founder of the Will Steger Foundation.

"The Ellesmere Island Expedition is an exciting way to raise awareness of the effects of climate change, which are already ongoing," said Eric Carlson, Executive Director of Carbonfund.org. "Of course, the expedition itself has a carbon footprint. It's a testament to the credibility of the Will Steger Foundation that it recognizes this and is assuming responsibility by offsetting its business and travel operations."
