Washington, DC - Carbonfund.org, a nonprofit organization that supports renewable energy to stop the threat of climate change, announced today its support for the Rosebud Sioux wind energy project on Native American soil in South Dakota. Carbonfund supporters, which include individuals and businesses who have offset their climate impact, are supporting the development of wind energy in America's heartland and on Native American soil. In addition to reducing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions that cause climate change, the project creates jobs and investment in areas that have been hard hit over the last decade.

"South Dakota has some of the strongest wind energy resources in the country and stands to be a leader in the development of America's most promising domestically-produced clean energy source: wind," says Carbonfund President Lesley Marcus Carlson. "Wind energy investment in rural America and on Native American land creates jobs and opportunities while supporting climate-friendly technology and is a perfect example of the additional benefits America receives when we invest in ourselves, instead of exporting our money and jobs for oil," she adds. Carbonfund is also supporting wind energy projects in Kansas, landfill methane recovery in California and reforestation in Montana and Arkansas.

Carbonfund is a simple concept. People and businesses impact climate change when they use electricity from coal-fired power plants, natural gas and oil to heat their homes and offices, and car and air travel. Carbonfund makes it simple for anyone to calculate their total 'carbon footprint'. Supporters then make tax-deductible donations to Carbonfund to offset their carbon footprint by supporting climate-friendly projects, such as wind energy, in other locations, where it is cheaper. Supporters receive certificates that highlight their donation and updates on the projects they are supporting.

"People told us they wanted an easy and affordable way to reduce their impact on the environment at the same time many politicians were saying it could not be done. Carbonfund continues to show that for less than $100 per year, or $8.25 per month, individuals can effectively reduce their impact on climate change to zero," adds Carlson. "When you add in the other benefits of being tax deductible and supporting jobs and investment in rural communities, Carbonfund and climate protection becomes a great opportunity for individuals and businesses to do their part."

The Rosebud Sioux tribe, located in southern South Dakota, is working in collaboration with the Basin Electric Power Cooperative on the wind energy project, while Basin is developing several other wind energy projects as well.
