EDMONDS,WA. - August 12, 2008 - New research from Green for Good of Seattle, WA shows that multi-service edge routers from Redback Networks, an Ericsson company, use only 50% of the energy as compared to competitors, and deliver up to 3 times the environmental benefits in reduced carbon emissions.

Green for Good analyzed the power requirements for routers made by Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Juniper and, Redback Networks in apples to apples configurations, focusing on the electricity needed to deliver a consistent set of broadband, phone and TV services. Green for Good then calculated the CO2 savings by comparing the power consumption required by each of the vendor's products to deliver the consistent triple-play solution.

The research showed that Redback customers worldwide using the SmartEdge(R) solution saved a total of more than $27 million in lower electricity costs in 2007 compared to alternative vendor's solutions (Green for Good 2008 study).

"Redback's multi-service edge router platform is a great example of how carriers can use a smaller energy footprint to deliver triple-play services," said David R. Kaufer, Founder and Chief Green Officer of Green for Good, Inc. "It shows that a big part of running a green business is creating higher levels of power efficiency and lower energy consumption. Technology innovation is cool, but every technology company also needs to make a choice between being a power saver or a power pig."

SMARTEDGE CARRIERS SAVE THE EQUIVALENT OF ALMOST ALL TREES IN NYC'S CENTRAL PARK

Studies show that 60 pounds of CO2 emissions is the equivalent of one lost tree. By reducing its CO2 emissions, SmartEdge carriers would save almost the same number of trees (24,309) every five years than the total number of trees in New York City's Central Park (26,000).

In the research, Green for Good found that other equivalent routers produced up to three times more CO2 emissions than Redback routers. Comparing the award-winning Redback SmartEdge 1200, Redback's largest multi-service edge router, with gear from numerous competitors (Cisco 7609 and 10000; Juniper E320 and MX960 or Alcatel 7750 and 7450), Redback’s triple play multi-service edge routers produce anywhere from 35-68% percent of the total CO2 emissions of competing solutions.

Research methodology used for this study is available on the Green for Good website.
