PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 2007--The Qwest Foundation recently presented a $10,000 check to the Phoenix Museum of History to support a wide variety of programs, including vocabulary, reading and hands-on materials for younger students and a study of local Hispanic involvement in the Civil War and present day conflicts.
The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office recently completed a comprehensive history of the local Hispanic American community. "We are thankful for the generosity of Qwest's grant, which will allow us to share this wealth of information with K through eighth grade students throughout the Valley," said Tracy Wright, executive director of the Phoenix Museum of History.
"The research that the City Historic Preservation Office conducted reveals a great deal about the Hispanic American experience during this critical recent history," said Pat Quinn, Qwest president in Arizona. "This is a wonderful opportunity for Qwest to help share this research with a greater number of students."
The museum intends to create three programs, all age specific:
A K-3rd grade program includes Hispanic American literature used during classroom story time, historical photographs and images to inspire children's imaginations about the past, along with classroom games and activities like coloring or adobe making.
Older children would incorporate hands-on artifacts that speak to the Hispanic experience in Phoenix, classroom activities like games and group discussion, and even small crafts that represent the Hispanic American culture.
The oldest students will learn about contributions made during the Civil War and experience a traveling trunk show with more extensive and detailed lectures by museum staff, an audio-visual presentation, artifacts, and follow-up assignments to reinforce the presented information.
