Dallas, Texas - CHARITY magazine, a new publication uplifting, promoting and celebrating philanthropy in communities of color will be available later this year. The complementary website, www.CharityMagazine.us, launched today, the publisher announced. Nonprofit professionals, donors, and volunteers represent the targeted audience for the website and the publication. Site visitors can preview content, share stories about giving and volunteerism, join CHARITY's email list, or take advantage of the "Early Bird" subscription offer.

Cathy Hughes, media pioneer, founder and chairperson of Radio One, is the cover story for the inaugural issue. With a circulation of 100,000, the magazine will boast Perfect Bound construction and high quality paper cut to a non-standard sheet size. "It's important to us that our magazine be intelligent and beautiful," says publisher Joy Strickland.

"People of color with the means and motivation to give represent a significant advertising opportunity. In addition to nonprofit organizations, we hope to attract the leaders in corporate philanthropy and those for whom diversity and corporate responsibility are high priorities. Our magazine is an excellent publication for image advertising," Strickland says.

Nonprofit and faith-based organizations with a combined constituency exceeding 22,000 have signed on as CHARITY Partners for the mutual exchange of marketing opportunities. To date the list includes:

  • The Foundation for Community Empowerment
  • The National Center for Black Philanthropy
  • Trumpet Magazine
  • Avery Research Center
  • Friendship West Baptist Church
  • Mothers Against Teen Violence

Strickland says, "For years, there has been an information gap on the subject of philanthropy in communities of color, partly because positive stories usually take a back seat to headlines favoring crime and violence. We all stand to benefit when stories that exemplify the best in us are impressed upon our national consciousness. I started this project over two years ago. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina there is a heightened interest in nonprofit news, giving, and volunteerism, but this topic needs our sustained attention and focus."
