National Autonomous University of Mexico and Via Delphi Aquatic Mammals Research Institute Sign a Cooperative Agreement

September 11, 2007 - The Rector of Mexico's leading university, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM), Dr. Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez and the Via Delphi Aquatic Mammals Research Institute, led by Lic. Francisco Cordova Lira, signed a cooperative agreement aimed at increasing the sharing and production technical and scientific knowledge of aquatic mammals in Mexico and around the world.

The agreement is meant to structure information exchanges between both scientific institutions. It encompasses aquatic mammals in general with a special focus on bottle nose dolphins kept under controlled conditions and living in the wild. This new project will allow university students studying veterinary medicine, biology and biochemistry all the way up to doctorate levels to complete their studies and engage in active research with dolphins at the institute's facilities. The exchange will also serve as a framework agreement for Via Delphi to obtain additional information using university's programs, research and equipment.

Juan Ramón de la Fuente underlined the importance of continued private-sector support for science and research "this is about organizing a series of actions which I've been supervising for some time involving a business group known for their outstanding achievements, modern ideas and community involvement. It is not very common in Mexico to find companies that integrate functioning support for local communities and research as part of their business activities. The absence of such examples is one of our main problems today, but I also believe that as businesses such as this one continue to prosper they will provide a good example for others to follow. The principal message here is that by combining resources and efforts significant results can be achieved. It is important to recognize the hard work of corporations such as Via Delphi who allocate portions of their resources to scientific research. These companies are not only concerned about the wealth and employment generated by a healthy bottom line, they are also conscious of their moral obligation to be responsible leaders and to use their resources to assist communities in the development of truly sustainable social and financial models".

During their conversations Via Delphi Research Institute's President and Managing Director, of Grupo Via Delphi, Francisco Cordova, told the Rector and audience that he consolidated 17 years of efforts and research by Oscar Constandse and Adan Zurbia into an institution, "during 2005 and 2006 the Group invested 21 million pesos (almost $2 million US) in veterinary medical and scientific research, with an additional 11million pesos ($1 million US) spent in 2007. These figures represent money Via Delphi could save if we were not as committed to our vision of sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and the establishment of solid links with different academic sectors, especially the university community."

National Autonomous University of Mexico:

The National Autonomous University of Mexico is the largest university in Mexico and the Spanish speaking Americas with more than 300,000 students. The University produces over 60% of scientific research in Mexico, and according to the daily The Times Ranking, it is number 74 of the 100 best universities in the world.

Via Delphi:

Grupo Via Delphi is a fully Mexican owned corporation that pioneered dolphin swims in this country. It's five facilities are located in the Mexican Caribbean: on the Riviera Maya at Xcaret and Xel-Ha, in southern Quintana Roo at Majahual, and in the heart of Cancun’s hotel zone. From 2005 to date Grupo Via Delphi more than doubled its volume growing from 120,000 to 257,000 dolphin swims.

During Dr. Juan Ramón de la Fuentes' visit, Grupo Via Delphi unveiled their latest project, Sonar, the group's new scientific and social awareness magazine that will be available for reading in both English and Spanish at www.delphinus.com.mx/servicios/sonar.php
