Graduates of the Sustainable Tourism and Hotel Management program, together with students and teachers from the Universidad del Caribe in Quintana Roo, presented Francisco Cordova with the Hunab Ku Award, the university's emblematic sculpture by artist Silvia Arana. The award is given for his "valuable support of the Universidad del Caribe's educational programs". This first edition of the annual award will represent the university's recognition of persons and institutions who actively support higher learning in Quintana Roo.

First through Alquimia, then with Grupo Xcaret and now in Via Delphi, Mr. Cordova has always been an enthusiastic Universidad del Caribe supporter, providing important resources and financing for the design and development of educational programs. On behalf of the students and teachers, rector Fernando Espinoza de los Reyes speaking during a short ceremony on May 2 praised Mr. Cordova and thanked him for his continued support.

In accepting the honor, Francisco Cordova promised to continue helping the university, and pledged additional resources for updating their Sustainable Tourism and Hotel Management program in the short term.

Advances made with the help and support of sustainable tourism businesses in which Francisco Cordova is involved.

  • Design of a Bachelor of Sustainable Tourism and Hotel Management curriculum which began in June 2001.

  • The board of former Grupo Alquimia, headed by Francisco Cordova Lira, financed private-sector consulting and the completion of a program curriculum for the new Plan completed in 2002.

  • When the Sustainable Tourism and Hotel Management program was opened in 2002 it immediately experienced a high enrollment rate.

  • The program's first graduating class was in 2006 (67 graduates).

  • There are presently 447 students in the four program cycles.

  • The Universidad del Caribe was awarded the top category rating 1 out of a possible 3 because it is part of a select group comprising 15% of Mexican universities whose programs meet 90% of the top educational values set by the Committees for the Interinstitutional Evaluation of Higher Education Standards. These committees are made up of academics from the uppermost levels of education in Mexico.
