February 27, 2007- In December 2006, the turtles department of Xcaret’s aquarium released successfully the "Campechana", a sea turtle who suffered an accident in her natural environment which almost took her life.

"The Campechana", was hit by the prow of a boat. In response to a special request of PROFEPA she was transferred the 31st of January 2005 to Xcaret in a desperate effort to save the animal’s life. She arrived with multiple skull fractures and an ulcer in her left eye.

Once she was there, the vet in charge, Ana Cecilia Negrete, and her team took care of the turtle, practiced several surgeries on her, and fed her.

Daily, during the next 3 months they treated the wounds on her head and her eye using honey. This technique is part of an experimental treatment which proved to be successful in the Xcaret aquarium.

45 days after, the Campechana recovered her sight and the fractures on her skull healed. When the injuries healed completely they started a period of rehabilitation in the turtle lagoon located inside the park.

Going through this process, helped the lovely Campechana recover her natural skills, like getting her own food by herself, readapting to life on her natural environment and recovering her natural movements on swimming and diving.

Last December 20th. 2006, the "Campechana" was released successfully. We are deeply proud and thankful of the great effort made by the turtles department of the aquarium who managed to save and rehabilitate this wonderful animal.
