LYNNFIELD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2007--Easter Seals. Autism Speaks. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. St. Jude Children's Research. Franciscan Hospital for Children. Just a few of the organizations that Investors Capital helps keep going with its "Jeans Money".
Fridays are casual days at Investors Capital Corporation (ICC), a premier independent broker/dealer located in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. And it goes without saying that employees clad in professional garb Monday through Thursday relish finishing out the work week in the traditional casual day garb of khakis or slacks. Or they may opt to get really casual and wear blue jeans to the office--for a cost of $5.
For those who choose to pay the fee and don their denim, their fivers are collected and, each month, the pot given to a designated charity. Oftentimes, the selected charity has deep, emotional roots in the close-knit Investors Capital community, either with a representative or a member of the home office staff.
"Many companies give their employees casual Fridays as a perk for the employees, but we wanted to take it one step further," said Event Manager Susan Richard. "Jeans Fridays are a great way for Investors Capital employees to sport their favorite jeans and, at the same time, donate monthly to a very special cause."
For example, the jeans money for the month of June 2006 went to the Michael Klingsmith Memorial Fund. Michael was an Investors Capital representative who died in a car accident. The donation went to his widow. August's collection went to the Benjamin Park Fund to help create a park in memory of an ICC home office employee's family who had lost a baby. Last month, the money went to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
"A recurring theme in our suggestion box was wearing blue jeans on Friday because the dress code was professional every day," said Executive Assistant Ellen Reardon, who came up with the idea with Richard. "Susan and I saw 'blue jeans with a cause' as an opportunity to both make the staff happy and be charitable at the same time. The CEO liked that."
In 2006, Investors Capital employees donated more than $5,300 to numerous charities throughout the year.
