SUDBURY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2006--Jones and Bartlett Publishers (J&B) has announced a training grant valued in excess of $1,000,000. This training grant will be distributed exclusively through members of the North American Fire Training Directors (NAFTD). In exchange for participation in a research study to determine the effectiveness of fire fighter I and II distance learning, all 50 states and 13 Canadian provinces and territories are eligible to receive free access codes to J&B's distance learning course for fire fighter I and II, FireLearn. Each state and province is eligible to receive $20,000 worth of access codes.

"The fire service now has an increased need for state-of-the-art training materials. Online fire service training is rapidly becoming an important component of the teaching and learning standard. Jones and Bartlett is the leader in providing this innovative technology. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer the NAFTD this million dollar grant that will have an impact on the future of fire service training," said Clayton Jones, CEO of J&B.

J&B, in partnership with EducExpert, has developed a distance learning course to compliment Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, a training program covering the 2002 Editions of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, and 472, Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Incidents. FireLearn gives students the opportunity to study or refresh their knowledge and critical thinking skills online. It also brings fire fighter I and II material to life with interactive audio, video, Flash(TM) animation, photography, illustrations, and case-based scenarios. FireLearn is a series of online modules designed to enhance students' learning experience by allowing them to experiment with key concepts and skills in the safety of a virtual environment.

"NAFTD is appreciative of this very generous offer from Jones and Bartlett to assist in this research study," said NAFTD President Gary Wilson. "If we are to continue to reach a million first responders annually, these alternative learning methods will become a bigger part of state training programs in the future. The results from this research will be of great benefit to NAFTD members, and in turn enhance the types of programs we provide first responders in the future."
